The Council of the University Abdou Moumouni of Niamey has decided during its January 2016 Session to name the WASCAL MRP building under construction after Prof Abdoulaye Alassane, the first MRP CC& Energy Director, who passed away during the 2015 Mecca pilgrimage. The holding of the PAUWES / WASCAL workshop was considered as a good occasion to perform both the inauguration of the building and naming ceremony.

The ceremony was held on Friday 10 March. It was presided by the Rector of the University Abdou Moumouni of Niamey, Prof Abarchi Habibou and the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Nils Wortmann (the Ambassador was away from the country).  .......

Workshop launching ceremony

The opening ceremony of the workshop took place at the MRP CC& Energy Center on Tuesday 28 February from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The ceremony was attended by the acting Rector, university Abdou Moumouni (UAM), Prof. Amadou Boureima and by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and technology,Prof. Bakasso Yacouba. The member of the WASCAL Board from Niger, by Prof. Hassirou Mahamadou as well as WASCAL lecturers and staff also attended the ceremony.

During his opening address, the acting Rector, Prof Boureima, (who spoke on behalf of the Rectorwho was out of town), expressed the pleasure of UAM of welcoming students from the African Union / PAUWES, coming from a wide range of African countries. He also ensured all partners involved in the initiative, particularly WASCAL, ZEF and PAUWES, of his university commitment for a strong and long lasting collaboration. Prior to the Rector statement, participants to the opening ceremony were presented a video address by Prof Janet Adelegan, the Director of Capacity Building Program of WASCAL. Prof Adelegan welcomed PAUWES students to WASCAL and wished all students a studious and productive workshop. The Dean of the Faculty of Science and technology (Prof. Bakasso Yacouba) and the Director of the WASCAL MRP CC & Energy also made short statements to welcome the PAUWES students and wish all a nice workshop.

Needs and Potentialities in Capacity Building in Niger/Climate Change

WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a training and research program designed to cope with the challenges of increasing climate variability and to increase the resilience of human and environmental systems in West Africa. WASCAL as a Capacity Building Program aims on one hand to train the next generation of West African scientists to gain in-depth knowledge of climate-related issues in order to develop appropriate management strategies and, on  In the framework of the capacity building of actors involved in water resources, energy, and environment management under the context of climate change, the WASCAL program in Climate Change and Energy at Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey (Niger) administered a survey  from 20 December 2016 to 30 January 2017 to  assess trainings needs related to: (i) climate change, water resources, energy and biodiversity nexus; (ii) the identification of stakeholders in climate change related areas, and technical and financial partners. The survey involved several national services, international institutions, and NGOs based in Niamey.  other hand, to reinforce the expertise and capacity of national and regional technical services, NGOs and farmers' organizations.
